British Armed Forces Minister Heappey says UK support for the Lebanese Army continues
The British Embassy announced on Wednesday in a statement that British Armed Forces Minister and Member of Parliament James Heappey concluded his one-day visit to Lebanon yesterday, during which he saw how British projects support the Lebanese Armed Forces in their mission to maintain stability across Lebanon.

Heappey met with Defense Minister Maurice Selim and Lebanese Armed Forces Commander Major General Joseph Aoun, accompanied in the presence of British Ambassador to Lebanon Ian Collard accompanied by Military Attaché Lt. Col. Lee Richard Saunders, whereby they discussed military cooperation between both countries.

On a visit to the 3rd Land Border Regiment (LBR) in the Bekaa on the border with Syria, Minister Heappey heard from senior Lebanese officers how the UK's work in strengthening the capabilities of the LBRs has improved efforts to combat cross-border smuggling and terrorist activities, making the area safer for local communities.

Additionally, UK support has enabled the deployment of four LBRs, construction of more than 78 border towers, provision of 350 Land Rovers, 100 armored patrol vehicles, and training of over 20,000 personnel of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).

“The UK and Lebanon are friends and partners, and I was proud to see the positive impact of the military cooperation between our two countries that has spanned more than a decade,” Heappey stated.

He went on to say that in times of need, the UK stands side by side with Lebanon and their partners around the world, in order to meet common challenges, indicating that “in these international circumstances, it is more important than ever that we continue to work together to combat threats to global peace and security.”

Heappey also mentioned that he greatly enjoyed his first visit to “this beautiful country” and that he hopes to return.

For his part, the British Ambassador stressed that he is delighted to host Minister Heappey, on his first visit to Lebanon.

“The Lebanese Armed Forces is crucial to ensuring Lebanon’s stability and protecting the Lebanese people during these difficult times,” Collard said, pointing out that “since 2010, the UK has allocated over £87 million to optimize the LAF’s capabilities, which underlines the UK’s government commitment to a safe and stable Lebanon.”
