European Commission President welcomes signs of progress toward US-Iran deal

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed on Sunday signs of progress in talks over a possible peace agreement between the United States and Iran.

“I welcome the progress made toward an agreement between the United States and Iran,” von der Leyen wrote on X. “We need a deal that truly de-escalates tensions, reopens the Strait of Hormuz and guarantees full freedom of navigation without fees. Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.”

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington and Iran had “completed a great deal of negotiation” on a memorandum of understanding related to a peace agreement that would lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
