REPORT: Lebanon bids farewell to revered poet, philosopher Said Akl
The funeral service for veteran poet, philosopher and revered linguist Said Akl was held on Tuesday morning at Saint Georges Cathedral in downtown Beirut.

Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai led the prayers.

“Akl loved Lebanon and raised Lebanon's name high,” Patriarch Rai noted.

His coffin will be taken to his hometown Zahle in the Bekaa valley for burial.

Earlier, the convoy that escorted Akl's body moved from Notre Dame University (NDU) in the Zouk Mosbeh region toward the Saint Georges Church.

Hoisting Lebanese flags, students of Zouk Mosbeh official school stopped the procession and threw roses in honor of the passing poet.

Akl passed away at the age of 102 on Friday, the state-run National News Agency confirmed.

A Lebanese poet, writer, playwright and language reformer from the Bekaa town of Zahle, Akl is considered one of the most important modern Lebanese poets.

He is also an advocate of nationalism, the Lebanese identity, and language, leading him to design a Latin-based "Lebanese alphabet" comprised of 37 letters.
