REPORT: Truth behind customs evasion through Syrian port of Tartous
During the first parliament session to discuss the budget draft law, MP Khaled al-Daher said that goods are being imported into Lebanon through Syria’s Tartous port via Homs and al-Qusair in a bid to evade customs fees.

Well-informed sources said that some traders, in order to evade customs, transport their goods through Syrian port of Tartous, paying only transit fees and port fees to transport them to Lebanon.

They then bring the cargo into Lebanon through smuggling and evade the payment of customs fees that make more than double the transit fees.

Even if they transport the goods, through the Lebanese legal crossings, they would manipulate the data so they pay way less than they should.

Other sources involved in the work at Tripoli and Beirut ports expressed doubt over MP el-Daher statements, basing their position on the fact that numbers show constant growth in terms of port activity.
