President Aoun meets his Irish counterpart in Baabda

President Michel Aoun said on Thursday that he discussed with President of Ireland Michael Higgins on the importance of reaching political solutions for the Syrian refugee crisis, mainly that Lebanon is “no longer able to bear the brunt of this massive displacement.”

 

Aoun’s comments were made following a meeting with the Irish president in Baabda Presidential Palace whereby he thanked Ireland for its “active participation in the peacekeeping forces in south Lebanon that contributed to the maintenance of Lebanon's security and stability for more than 40 continuous years.”

 

On another note, Aoun said that he stressed to Higgins Lebanon’s full respect to resolution no. 1701, adding however that Lebanon is committed to its legitimate right to self-defense, mainly that "Israel is violating this decision by land, sea and air."

 

Aoun concluded by stressing need to activating the Irish-Lebanese relations on all levels.
