On the sidelines of his participation in the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil met with his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Mouallem, in the presence of Syria’s representative at the United Nations Bashar al-Jaafari.
During the meeting, al-Mouallem stressed that the refugees will return to their home country, in particular to the safe zones in Syria, noting Syria needs the people for the rebuilding process.
Sources said that Bassil, who called for the meeting with the Syrian minister, wanted to show the political forces on the Lebanese local scene that the relations with Syria exist. He also stressed that he met with al-Mouallem as Lebanon’s Foreign Minister and not personally.
Addressing Lebanese nationals in the region of Jacksonville in Florida, Bassil stressed that Lebanon independently makes its decisions in this stage.
