REPORT: Does Iraqi Kurdistan have the required characteristics to be a state?

The Iraqi Kurdistan has an area of 40 thousand square kilometers with a population of 5 million people, mostly Kurds.

Kurdistan has its own institutions and an army of Peshmerga with an estimated number of soldiers reaching 200,000 members, equipped with advanced weapons and have played a major role in defeating the Islamic State in Iraq.

In Kurdistan, with its capital Erbil, there are two airports: Erbil International Airport and Sulaimaniyah International Airport.

Oil is the region’s most essential resource, bringing into its treasury a yearly amount of nearly USD 11 billion; but such an amount remains not enough to establish an independent state, especially that the majority of the oil comes from the region of Kirkuk, which Baghdad refuses to include it in Kurdistan.
