Italian chefs prepared a traditional Neapolitan meal from ingredients that are readily available for a group of Syrian refugees living in the Azraq camp in the north of Jordan.
Chef Filippo DeMayo, joined by two of his apprentices, taught 30 Syrian women how to prepare a strawberry jam crostata and gnocchi with tomato sauce on Thursday (November 23).
The women rolled up their sleeves to learn for themselves how to knead the dough and shape the pasta for the meal.
The event, held in cooperation with the World Food Program, coincided with the international week of Italian cuisine. It aims to show solidarity with the residents of the camp and expose them to some aspects of Italian culture.
The Azraq camp is home to around 36,000 Syrians who fled the conflict in their country.
Opened in 2014, the camp is the second largest Syrian refugee camp in the country. It is located 100km east of Amman in the Zarqa Governorate.
The Jordanian government says the country is home to 1.4 million Syrians, of whom more than 660,000 are registered with the UN refugee agency UNHCR.
