Opinions divided over Notre Dame fire, which is not the first to target churches in France

A number of comments breached the wall of global solidarity expressed with the fire that ravaged Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral.

Some users considered this incident "as a promise for the demise of the colonial state that spreads hatred against the Muslims," as one said.

The cathedral fire was considered a historic disaster; however it is not the first of its kind, whether arson or accidental.

During the first 2 months of 2019, a 25% increase in attacks targeting Catholic churches in France was registered, in comparison with the same period of last year, according to NewsWeek magazine, “while the officials don’t know why.”

Executive director of the Vienna-based Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe said “the pressure is coming from the radical secularists or anti-religion groups as well as feminist activists who tend to target churches as a symbol of the patriarchy that needs to be dismantled.”

Not only the Catholic churches are being targeted in France, but in April the Armenian Evangelical Church in Alfortville was vandalized.
