Kith and kin of late former French president Jacques Chirac gathered on Monday (September 30) at Paris’ Montparnasse cemetery for a private burial ceremony.
Chirac, a political chameleon who dominated French politics for decades and strived to make France’s voice heard in Europe and beyond, died on Thursday (September 26) at the age of 86.
He was set to be buried next to his late daughter Laurence Chirac, who suffered from anorexia and died in 2016 at the age of 58.
The burial followed a military honors ceremony for Chirac at the Hotel des Invalides, during which French president Emmanuel Macron saluted his predecessor who served as the country’s president for 12 years from 1995 to 2007.
A funeral service attended by about 30 current and former world leaders also preceded the burial.
