US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that “they know that the financial situation in Lebanon is very serious and the central bank is under real pressure.”
“The Lebanese people are finding challenges to have access to their accounts in a way that is full, sufficient and adequate,” he noted, stressing that they need to continue to work on that.
Pompeo added that the responsibility for how the government of Lebanon will be formed and shaped falls on the Lebanese people to demand Lebanon’s sovereignty, prosperity and freedom from influence from outside entities.
“We have a designated terrorist organization there that is Hezbollah,” he said, pointing out that he knows that the people of Lebanon understand the risk that this presents to their freedom and their capacity to deliver to themselves.
Pompeo also stressed that the United States stands ready to do the things to assist the Lebanese people of getting their economy righted and their government righted, hoping that they will be successful in that.
