Venice Carnival to be halted due to coronavirus outbreak
Revelers at the famed Venice Carnival were wearing two types of masks on Sunday (February 23) - a protective face mask over their usual colorful, elaborate ones, as the last two days of the carnival were cancelled due to an outbreak of coronavirus.
The head of the Veneto region Luca Zaia announced earlier on Sunday that events scheduled for Sunday in the lagoon city would continue as planned, but as of the evening there would be a ban on the carnival, as well as all other events including sports.
However, revelers still flocked to Venice dolled up in elaborate costumes and garments - one even dressing as the doctor of the plague and others wearing ancient gas marks, adding a sombre mood.
Carnival goers were not convinced that cancelling the rest of carnival was a good idea.
"The panic is more contagious than the virus and at this point it's a bit unnecessary, don't you think?" said Marianna Purisol.

The first two cases of coronavirus were reported in Venice on Sunday as officials struggled to contain an outbreak of the disease across northern Italy.
