British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged the British public to get vaccinated in a Christmas message released on Friday (December 24).

"Though the time for buying presents is theoretically running out, there is still a wonderful thing you can give your family and the whole country, and that is to get that jab - whether it is your first, or your second, or your booster," he said.

Johnson, who had previously ruled out new COVID-19 restrictions before Christmas, said he believed this year's holiday would be "significantly better" than last year's, which occurred while mixing between households was not allowed.

However, he also urged people to take precautions when visiting elderly or vulnerable relatives.

Britain reported a record 119,789 new daily COVID-19 cases on Thursday (December 23), compared with 106,122 a day earlier.

There were 147 deaths within 28 days of a positive case, versus 140 on Wednesday (December 22), according to government data.
