Kataeb party calls for declaring border region a military zone

The Kataeb party political bureau refused on Monday any suggestion to postpone the parliamentary elections, warning against any attempt to extend the mandate of the Parliament without reaching a new electoral law. It added that “such matters will drag the country toward the unknown and will harm the governmental institutions,” allowing the de facto forces to become stronger than the State which would turn into a vulnerable entity unable to take fundamental decisions.

During its weekly meeting headed by the party’s leader Amine Gemayel, the Kataeb political bureau stressed that the dangerous situation prevailing over the Lebanese-Syrian borders requires the declaration of the region as a military zone ruled by the Lebanese Army, calling on everyone to commit to the “Baabda Declaration” in order to maintain internal stability.

In this context, the bureau stated that the latest developments make it imperative for the government to amend the item 14 of the UN resolution 1701, so that the United Nations Interim Forces could help the Lebanese Army in protecting the Lebanese towns from the violations carried out by the Syrian regime.

On another note, the party urged the government to take advantage of the truce granted by the union of private schools and of the return of the students to school, to discuss and finalize the ranks and salaries series and refer it to the Parliament on time.
