The Vatican recognized Lebanon as a pilgrimage destination after removing the country from the list back in 2005.
Lebanon is considered one of the oldest and most important pilgrimage destinations in the region, with more than 3000 Islamic and Christian sites dating back hundreds of years.
In 2005 and after the assassination of Rafiq Hariri, the Vatican suspended all pilgrimage tours to Lebanon and upheld its decision after July 2006 war.
In 2017 and during a visit to the Vatican, the President of the Republic raised the issue with the officials, in a bid to bring back Lebanon to the list.
