US envoy praises President Aoun’s willingness to engage with Israel, calls for direct meetings

U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa said Washington is keen to see peace prevail in Lebanon and that he is doing everything in his power to help achieve that goal.

Speaking after meeting Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros al-Rahi, Issa said the Lebanese army must carry out its duties, adding, “That is what we expect.”

He added that the United States had asked the Lebanese army to remain in Christian villages in southern Lebanon to ensure their protection, noting that “so far, things are going well.”

Issa also expressed U.S. appreciation for President Joseph Aoun’s willingness to engage with Israel to resolve the conflict, but said Lebanon must decide whether it can hold such talks while strikes continue.

He stressed that there can be no peace between Lebanon and Israel without meetings.
