Interior and Municipalities Minister Raya al-Hassan stressed Thursday her rejection to any measure aiming at preventing any faction of the Lebanese people from living in a certain region.
In a statement to LBCI’s Nharkom Said, al-Hassan said that she heard the statement of Hadath Mayor George Aoun, adding that she will request from Mount Lebanon Governor to listen to his remarks.
“If everything was confirmed, we will ask him to withdraw this unconstitutional measure,” she noted.
The minister’s remarks came after a report was aired on LBCI during Wednesday’s news bulletin, in which the mayor of Hadath had said that a decision preventing Muslims from buying or renting apartments in the region of Hadath has been in place for 9 years, adding that the municipality has been maintaining this decision to preserve coexistence.
“We still have 40% of Hadath owned by Christians and we keep telling them not to sell or rent their properties to preserve coexistence,” said.
Commenting on accusations of being racist, Mayor George Aoun rejected such accusations, saying that the municipality does not distinguish between the Christians and the Muslims who own 60 to 65% of Hadath.
“The residents of the region support this decision, President Michel Aoun, speaker Nabih Berri and Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah also support his decision,” he noted.
