Turkish police dispose of bomb near Istanbul hotel
Police used a controlled explosion on Monday to destroy a bomb that was discovered outside a luxury hotel complex in Istanbul, officials said.

It was not known when the homemade device had been left near the Swissotel's perimeter walls. On Sunday, officials from more than 70 countries met in Istanbul to discuss ways of ending the uprising in Syria, but the hotel would not say if any of the officials stayed at Swissotel.

One of those officials, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, left Turkey after Sunday's meeting.

The bomb was discovered by cleaners who noticed an abandoned bag and notified police, and bomb squads closed adjacent roads and set it off in a controlled explosion, said state television TRT.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the device.

Kurdish rebels and militant leftist and Islamic groups have carried out bomb attacks in the city.
