US announces $40M in additional humanitarian assistance for vulnerable people affected by the crisis In Lebanon
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing an additional $40 million in humanitarian assistance to vulnerable people in Lebanon as they grapple with the effects of the ongoing economic and financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and ongoing displacement caused by the Syrian civil war.
With this funding, USAID is collaborating with the UN World Food Program to provide emergency food assistance to nearly 740,000 people, including vulnerable Syrian refugees and Lebanese populations, for four months.
This latest USAID contribution comes as food prices in Lebanon continue to rise as a result of the country's collapsing currency and overlapping crises that exacerbate food insecurity and reduce people's ability to purchase basic necessities.
As Lebanon's largest donor of humanitarian aid, the United States has now contributed more than $440 million since October 2020, during which time the country's economic and financial crisis has worsened. The US remains deeply concerned about Lebanon's growing humanitarian needs and continues to urge other donors to increase their contributions to this response.
