PM Salam: The Resistance is needed so long as Lebanese territories are occupied

Prime Minister Tammam Salam voiced on Tuesday hopes that Wednesday's parliamentary session would produce a new president for the country.

Salam added that there are no obstacles in agreeing on the name of the new president as was the case while forming the new government.

He also noted that the current cabinet is managing the Lebanese people's daily issues, adding that the country is not on the brink of civil war.

Salam stressed that an International and regional decision was issued to spare the country any possible security chaos amid the regional crises.

Salam concluded by calling for the Resistance to adhere to the Lebanese state's authority, adding that so long as there are occupied Lebanese territories, the Resistance is needed.

President Michel Sleiman's tenure ends in May, but the constitutional period to elect a new head of state began on March 25.

In February, Lebanon formed a new government, breaking a 10-month political deadlock during which a caretaker government with limited powers was in charge.

Many Lebanese hope that a working government and the election of a new president will bring stability and leadership.
