AFP: 6 Syrians killed and the EU prepares for a round of fresh sanctions
Human rights activists told AFP Saturday that six people were killed during a raid by the Syrian military and security forces in Idlib province and in Homes.

The Syrian Human Rights Observatory said that a raid in Der Baalba neighborhood in Homes province killed one person, adding that the cellphones and electricity lines were cut off in the village of Hawla in Homes province Saturday night.

The blackout followed the arrival of 25 military bus and 10 tanks to Hawla. Security forces arrested 17 persons in Harbanfasa village east of Hawla.

On the international level, the European Union imposed a ban on purchases of Syrian oil on Saturday and warned of further steps unless President Bashar al-Assad's government ends its five-month crackdown on dissent.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said that if Bashar al-Assad is not listening and if there is no change in the regime, the sanctions will have to be intensified.

His German counterpart Guido Westerwelle said “one cannot exclude talks in Europe over extra measures should the repression continue.”

EU foreign policy Chief Catherine Ashton said: “We’ll continue to put the pressure on and to look for ways of doing so.”

Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez also urged “an international condemnation”, not only to isolate the regime but also to support the Syrian people.
