Bassil: Issue of Syrian refugees pose threat to Lebanese entity

Caretaker Energy Minister Gebran Bassil warned of the effects of the rising influx of Syrian refugees into Lebanon saying “two peoples are now living in one country under volatile conditions."

During a press conference held Friday to discuss the case of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Bassil declared that the number of those officially registered have reached 1.3 million, pointing out that by the end of year 2014, the number of Syrian nationals is expected to rise and consequently constitute more than 50% of the Lebanese people.

Bassil added that the only solution to the the issue is by sharing the burden imposed on Lebanon by the refugees with other countries, calling on authorities to send back refugees to their place of origin where refugee camps can be established.

In this context, he stressed that the Christian exodus from Syria should not be encouraged, warning against “a systematic policy aiming at driving Christians out of Syria and the Middle East.”
