Rai calls on officials to abandon their personal interests and assume national responsibilities
The Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros Rai declared Sunday that the “national memorandum” can help overcome the controversy imposed over several issues and hindering the issuance of the cabinet’s policy statement, with the constitutional deadline drawing near.

In his holy sermon during Sunday’s mass, Rai called on officials and politicians to abandon their personal interests and assume their security, living and economic responsibilities to serve the country’s best interest, stressing that the issues preventing the policy statement from being issued do not serve the high national interest.

Rai added that the cabinet’s main duty is to hold the presidential elections in accordance with the constitutional dates.

“It is shameful to hear people speaking of potential political void in case of failure to elect a new president in a democratic country such as Lebanon,” he noted, stressing that the new government is capable of accomplishing this challenge.
