MP Kanaan: Government granted LAF necessary cover to eliminate Takfiri groups

The Change and Reform bloc said on Tuesday that a new budget for Lebanon should focus on properly equipping the army due to the terrorist challenges it is addressing.

MP Ibrahim Kanaan’s comments were made following the bloc's weekly meeting, whereby he said that “armed takfiri group assaulted Lebanese territories and attacked the Lebanese army,” in reference to the August clashes between the army and Islamist gunmen in the border town of Arsal.

“We therefore reject any claims that such an attack was aimed at creating civil war in Lebanon,” he added.

Kanaan asserted that the Lebanese government granted the army the necessary cover to eliminate the takfiri groups.”

The Islamists abducted at the end of the August clashes several soldiers and policemen.

Efforts are underway to ensure their release despite the gunmen's execution of three of the captives.

As for the possibility of holding legislative sessions to solve the Lebanese people’s pending issues, Kanaan said that the bloc has never stood against these sessions.

He added however that the bloc will remain committed to the stances it took over contentious affairs such as the state budget and the new pay scale.

The Future and Kataeb blocs of the March 14 camp have rejected holding legislative sessions amid the ongoing presidential vacuum.

The Lebanese Forces bloc recently announced its readiness to return to the sessions.
