Cabinet session ends, pay scale discussions postponed until Thursday

The cabinet session ended on Tuesday afternoon and postponed the discussion over the fate of the pay scale until Thursday.

The cabinet had convened earlier Tuesday to discuss the pay scale after the Constitutional Council repealed the new tax hike law, passed to fund the pay scale.

Prior to the session, Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq said that reports stating that the governmental stability is in danger are exaggerating.

In turn, Sports and Youth Minister Mohammad Fneish noted that the pay scale is a right and it has to be paid, pointing out that the issue requires discussions in order to guarantee funding.

For his part, Justice Minister Jreissati said that the decision will be to pay the salaries according to the new scale, adding that any proposal by the finance minister will be acceptable on the condition to be complete.

Similarly, State Minister Nicolas Tueini stressed that the pay scale will be approved.

However, Information Minister Melhem al-Riachi declared that he is not certain of the decision to pay the pay scale.

Meanwhile, sit-ins were held in Riad al-Solh square to exert pressure on the cabinet.
