Australian man of Lebanese origin Nazih Halim al-Asmar elected as Speaker of Australian parliament
Nazih Halim al-Asmar of Lebanese origin was elected as Speaker of Australian parliament unanimously.
 
Al-Asmar hails from the Beirut town of Hadath and immigrated to Australia in 1973 after he completed his university studies.
 
He was elected as head of Melbourne municipality, then a lawmaker before being elected as Speaker yesterday.
