Lebanese Sunni Sheikhs denounce civil marriage

AFP news agency reported that Sunni Sheikhs strongly criticized civil marriage during the Friday Speeches, describing it as a “project to incite strife” in Lebanon.

The Sheikhs said that civil marriage contradicts the Muslim Sharia and therefore is completely rejected.

The Sheikhs’ position comes after Kholoud Sukkariyah and Nidal Darwish signed a civil marriage contract in Lebanon.

The registration of the couple’s marriage is still stuck due to legal obstacles since the Lebanese law does not allow the execution of civil marriage contracts in Lebanon and the personal status of each Lebanese citizen is registered according to his/her confession.
