Astronomically, the winter solstice marks the longest night of the year, but for Iranians, it is also known as Shab-e Yalda, which is a celebration with ancient ties commemorating the triumph of Mithra, the Sun God, over darkness.  

On this occasion, the markets become full of fresh fruits from the summer, such as pomegranates, watermelon melons and various dried nuts, while Iranians all around the world stay up to mark the start of winter.
