OIC FMs hold talks on Syria, Palestinians at Istanbul meeting
Foreign ministers from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) met in Istanbul on Tuesday (April 12) ahead of a leaders' summit where issues including Syria, Yemen, Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh are due to be discussed.
At the opening session, Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called on the Muslim World to bring an end to the conflict in Syria, now in its sixth year.
He also denounced the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, saying there would be no stability in the region until the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory ended.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is one of a number of leaders set to attend the heads of state conference, also in Istanbul, on Thursday (April 14) and Friday (April 15).
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman said on Monday (April 11) that Ankara would not drop its demand for an end to the blockade of Gaza in order to normalize relations with Israel.
Turkey was once Israel's closest regional ally but ties collapsed in 2010 over the killing by Israeli marines of 10 Turkish pro-Palestinian activists who tried to breach the Gaza blockade.
Israel allows commercial goods into Gaza daily but limits the transfer of certain items such as cement and building materials as it fears militants will use them to build fortifications.
