Higher Defense Council calls for strong efforts to fight against terror

The Higher Defense Council condemned Wednesday the “criminal act” that targeted the Iranian Embassy on Tuesday, calling for deploying strong efforts in order to fight against terrorism.

Following its meeting held at the Baabda Palace, the council praised the Lebanese stance that showed a united will to reject terrorism.

In this context, the security apparatuses briefed the conferees on the available data that will be used in order to track and arrest the planners and perpetrators of the attack, and refer them to the concerned judiciary.

The Higher Defense Council convened under the chairmanship of President Michel Sleiman, and in the presence of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, deputy Prime Minister Samir Moqbel, and caretaker ministers Fayez Ghosn, Mohammad Safadi, Ali Hassan Khalil and Wael Abou Faour.

Prior to the council’s meeting, Sleiman held a closed meeting with Mikati.

A double suicide attack targeted on Tuesday, November 19 the Iranian embassy in south Beirut’s Bir el-Hassan region, killing at least 23 people, wounding 146 and damaging buildings in the embassy compound.

Caretaker Health Minister Ali Hassan Khalil stated that the Cultural Attache of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Sheikh Ibrahim Ansari was killed in the blasts. Ansari took his post in Lebanon a month ago and was overseeing all regional cultural activities.

The Abdullah Azzam brigades, a Lebanon-based al Qaeda affiliate, said it was behind a double suicide attack on the Iranian embassy.
