More than 50% of Beirut’s buildings vulnerable to accidents

After the collapse of Achrafieh’s building, the Lebanese are asking questions about building safety measures to protect the public, mainly in the capital city of Beirut.

Michel Mdawar is constantly worried about his parents who live in Achrafieh only meters away from Atallah Street where the building collapsed.

Experts say that 50 to 60% of the buildings are vulnerable to accidents, including relatively new buildings whose walls show signs of cracking.

The collapsed building was initially a two-floor building built of sandstone in the 1940s; subsequent floors were added over the years. These specifications apply to most of the old buildings located inside and outside the capital.
