Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan said on Thursday that the political crises in the country will continue until partnership is taken into consideration.
Kanaan’s comments were made during an interview with Voice of Lebanon radio (VDL) whereby he noted that the Free Patriotic Movement wants to activate the work of state institutions.
Kanaan also noted that the Christian representation at the Cabinet must be preserved, adding that the fate of today’s cabinet session is linked to the performance of Prime Minister Tammam Salam.
On Wednesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil reiterated the position voiced by the Change and Reform Bloc and Hezbollah stipulating their adherence to a unilateral position regarding the governmental deadlock, pointing out that "cabinet will not function without them."
Following a meeting with the ministers of the Free Patriotic Movement and Hezbollah, Minister Bassil noted "certain political factions are pushing the cabinet towards confrontation," adding "we are against escalatory measures but they are being provoked."
In this regard, Bassil stated that the FPM and Hezbollah are not against legislating at parliament; "but constitutional norms must be upheld."
Controversy surrounds Thursday’s cabinet session, with the Free Patriotic Movement calling for nationwide protests to be staged in parallel with the session.
The FPM has been pushing for the cabinet to discuss the appointment of high-ranking military and security officials, but last week, the ministers failed to tackle the issue, widening the gap between the different parties.
