Nadim Gemayel: Monopolization of arms encourages armament of all Lebanese

MP Nadim Gemayel said Wednesday that “Lebanon is going through a dangerous phase and its independence is at stake”, adding that the country’s survival requires the rescindment of any threatening statement or position.

Gemayel added, in his speech on the 29th anniversary of the assassination of former President Bachir Gemayel, that “the position of President Michel Sleiman and Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai on Hizollah’s weapons does not change the fact that these arms are illegitimate and are used on each political juncture.”

Gemayel said that “if Sleiman and Rai are convinced of the necessity of Hizbollah’s arms, then we are stopping short of defending our country,” adding that the monopolization of arms possession, under the pretext that the LAF is incapable of protecting Lebanon alone, encourages the armament of all the Lebanese, the Christians in particular.

On the situation in Syria, Gemayel said that the revolutions there are stirred up by a people gasping for freedom, adding that the Syrian events constitute an opportunity for a real reconciliation between Lebanese and Syrians.
