Patriarch Yazigi calls for peace and dialogue in Syria

New patriarch of the Greek-Orthodox Church of Antioch Youhanna Yazigi appealed for peace in Syria in his opening mass on Thursday (December 20).

The 57-year-old led his first mass at the Cathedral of Mary in Damascus after replacing Ignatius Hazim who died earlier this month.

"We in Antioch ask God to inspire all parties that are inflaming the conflict to lay down the weapons that give nothing but destruction and devastation," he said.

Patriarch Yazigi, who was born in Syria's Latakia city and trained as a civil engineer, said after his election ceremony in Beirut that Christians will remain on what he called their shared land in Syria.

Yazigi was appointed a deacon in 1979 and a priest in 1983. He was the Head of the Our Lady of Balamand Monastery from 2001 to 2005. In 2008 he was elected the Metropolitan of western and central Europe.
