The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs announced on Monday that the world's population is supposed to reach eight billion on November 15, with India expected to replace China and become the most populous country in 2023.
"While the world's population is expected to reach eight billion, it is a reminder of our shared responsibility to look after our planet and a moment to reflect on our commitments to one another that we still do not honor," UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement, without naming concrete cases.
It is also "an occasion to celebrate our diversity, to recognize our common humanity and to express our admiration for progress made in the health sector that has extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality," Guterres said.
