Saudi woman killed in car accident defying driving ban

Saudi local media reports stated on Thursday that a Saudi woman was killed in a car crash as she defied the kingdom’s ban on female driving.

The reports added that the woman lost control of her car and crashed into the wall of a club in the city of Riyadh, noting that the car caught fire which led to her death.

Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world where women are not allowed to drive.

The accident was not the first of its kind in the kingdom. In January 2012, a female driver was injured while her companion was killed when their car overturned in the Hael province.

Also, in November 2010, a woman driver along with her three female passengers were killed in a similar accident.

Women's rights activists launch frequent calls to challenge the ban by posting online videos showing themselves behind the wheel.

In addition to not being allowed to drive, Saudi women must cover themselves from head to toe and need permission from a male guardian to travel, work and marry.
