UN chief urges Syrian govt, opposition to show 'full faith' at peace talks
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday urged the Syrian government and opposition to show good faith at peace talks expected to start in Geneva in the coming days.

"I said with Chancellor Merkel that the Syrian government and the opposition must engage in full faith in the peace negotiations which will resume tomorrow," Ban said during a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Commenting on the European migrant crisis, Ban said he was concerned that some European countries were adopting measures to restrict the movement of refugees seeking protection.

"They shun their humanitarian responsibilities," Ban said.

The U.N. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura plans to start substantive peace talks by March 14, his spokeswoman said on Tuesday, five days later than his planned start on March 9.

Although the talks will officially resume on March 9, some participants in the talks will only arrive in Geneva on March 12, March 13 and March 14, De Mistura's spokeswoman Jessy Chahine told a regular U.N. briefing. She said the same participants had been invited as in the first round.
