France calls on Lebanese authorities to guarantee stability of institutions, unity - FM
France on Tuesday called on Lebanese authorities to guarantee stability and national unity in the country after Saad Hariri resigned as Lebanon's prime minister, declaring he had hit a "dead end" in trying to resolve a crisis unleashed by huge protests against the ruling elite and plunging the country deeper into turmoil.
"Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri has just resigned a few moments ago, which makes the crisis even worse in a way," French Foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told the National Assembly.
"Will politicians and political authorities decide to build Lebanon together? Will they put the collective interest of the country ahead of their of their own? That is the question posed by Prime Minister Hariri's resignation," he added.
The move by Hariri, the leading Sunni politician, points to rising political tensions that may complicate the formation of a new government that can tackle the worst economic crisis since Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war.
It also defies the powerful Iran-backed Shi'ite group Hezbollah which had wanted him to stay on. Hariri is seen as the focal point for Western and Gulf Arab aid to Lebanon, in dire need of financial support promised by these allies.
The turmoil has worsened Lebanon's acute economic crisis, with financial strains leading to a scarcity of hard currency and a weakening of the pegged Lebanese pound.
