US Congress approves extension of law to monitor phone calls, e-mails

The U.S. Congress approved a bill renewing the US government's authority to monitor phone calls and e-mails of suspected foreign spies and terrorists without obtaining a court order for each intercept.

The Congress refused amendments suggested by some Democrat and Republican Parliamentarians who sought to impose restrictions on this law which entered into force under the reign of former President Georges Bush following the 9/11 attacks.
