Man arrested on blasphemy charges turns out to be poet Mustafa Sbeity

Ahmad Sbeity, detained on charges of blasphemy against Virgin Mary through Facebook, turned out to be Poet Mustafa Sbeity, whose posts published Sunday raised a wave of anger across the social media platforms.

Lorca Sbeity, the poet’s daughter, had told al-Nahar newspaper that her father has always had two names, explaining that his name on the ID is Ahmad, but everyone knowns him as Mustafa.

It has been revealed that his Facebook account was not hacked, but he published the post to express his opinion in a moment of anger and drunkenness and due to personal family issues.

The Internal Security Forces Information branch had arrested Ahmad Sbeity (Lebanese citizen born in 1952) on charges of blasphemy against Virgin Mary on his Facebook account.

During the interrogation, he confessed to the charges, noting that he later removed the post upon the request of one of his relatives.

The detainee was referred to the concerned judiciary.
