Celebrations after historic win for Lebanon against South Korea

Lebanon beat South Korea, 2-1, in Tuesday's World Cup qualifying match at Sports City stadium in Beirut.

The historic victory drew the crowd, estimated at 4,000, to their feet in revelry and celebration as President Michel Sleiman descended onto the pitch to give each and every Lebanese player a warm hug and his congratulations.

After the game, the team headed to the Grand Serail where they were welcomed by PM Najib Mikati who congratulated them for the historic victory. The cabinet then announced that the Lebanese players will receive 10 million LBP for their efforts in securing Lebanon a place in World Cup 2014.

Celebrations swept across the country after Lebanon’s victory.

Long convoys of vehicles toured the capital’s streets despite the rainy weather, chanting patriotic slogans with enthusiasm and joy.

In Tyre, hundreds of residents gathered in Abou Dib’s Square to celebrate the victory.

The head of the Lebanese Football Union, Hashem Haidar, had earlier called on all Lebanese to support their team, stressing that everything is possible in football and that the Lebanese national team is fully prepared.

With this win, Lebanon will advance to the next round of play in the World Cup 2014 qualifying games.
