No cabinet session today…Mikati to speak publicly on STL funding

PM Najib Mikati announced on Wednesday, during a press conference, that "Lebanon's share of the STL costs has been transferred this morning."

Information made available to LBCI confirmed that the cabinet session scheduled to be held on Wednesday will be postponed allowing further discussions on a possible solution to fund the STL.

According to the same sources, behind-the-scenes contacts carried out by Speaker Nabih Berri are ongoing to find the appropriate solution.

PM Najib Mikati is expected to deliver a public speech today to tackle the STL funding issue.

Mikati had repeatedly announced “funding or resigning.”

Reuters had earlier reported that Lebanese politicians have agreed a deal to prevent the collapse of Prime Minister Najib Mikati's government over the funding of a U.N.-backed court investigating the 2005 killing of statesman Rafik al-Hariri, a Lebanese official said on Wednesday.

"An agreement has been reached for funding the court without having to put the matter to the cabinet or parliament," the official said, declining to be named. He said the funding obligation of over $30 million would be paid through a separate mechanism.

Mikati came to power in January with backing from the powerful political and militant movement Hezbollah, which opposes funding the court. Last week, he threatened to resign if he could not reach a deal on funding the court.
