US Embassy welcomes Lebanon’s updated Media Law, urges further reforms

The U.S. Embassy in Lebanon welcomed Parliament’s approval of the updated Media Law, describing it as an opportunity to advance Lebanon’s media landscape.

The embassy said effective implementation and further reforms, including ending the criminal prosecution of journalists simply for carrying out legitimate professional duties, are essential to protecting journalists, safeguarding press freedom and promoting a pluralistic and independent media environment.

It reaffirmed that the United States remains firmly committed to supporting Lebanon’s efforts to protect freedom of expression, shield journalists from political pressure and maintain a vibrant and independent media sector.
