Khazen to LBCI: Syrian crisis exposed, everyone in trouble

Change and Reform Bloc MP Farid El Khazen commented on the Orthodox proposal regarding the electoral law.

Khazen told Nharkom Said TV show on Monday that the Maronite broad meeting held in Bkerke complemented other previous meetings, adding that the meeting did not officially adopt the Orthodox proposal.

“The Orthodox proposal was rather considered as a basis for dialogue in a bid to reach a better electoral law,” he added.

Khazen said that the Christian community was not satisfied with previous electoral laws given that parts of Christian parliamentary seats were tied to other sects.

“The Orthodox meeting proposal ensures just representation; however, the plan is open to discussion,” he said

Khazen also tackled the events in Syria, saying that the Arab initiative is an alternative plan amid the unlikelihood of foreign intervention in Syria, adding that Damascus accepted the initiative to avoid the reference of the issue to the Security Council.

In his concluding remarks, Khazen likened the situation in Syria to that in Lebanon, adding that the Syrian crisis is exposed and everyone is in trouble.

“We face another challenge which is how the protocol clauses will be implemented on the ground,” he added.

Maronite leaders held a meeting in Bkerke on Friday under the patronage of Patriarch Beshara Rai to look into the electoral law.

The meeting saw the participation of the four main Maronite poles, meaning the head of the Kataeb party Amin Gemayel, the head of the Change and Reform bloc MP Michel Aoun, the head of the Lebanese Forces Samir Geagea and the head of the Marada movement MP Sleiman Frangieh.
