Sleiman: success of Arab initiative in Syria is in Lebanon’s best interest

President Michel Sleiman said on Tuesday that he is determined to exert all efforts needed to resume dialogue between different parties. Sleiman stressed that a dialogue is the foundation for maintaining the security of the Lebanese and reaching a national defense strategy.

During a press conference held in honor of the diplomatic corps, Sleiman announced that Lebanon regards the success of the Arab initiative in Syria as the protector of Lebanon’s best interests.

Sleiman stressed that Lebanon is keeping a close eye on the acute tensions in the Gulf, voicing hope that Iraq will be able to move forward with appropriate policies.

“Lebanon was able to maintain stability and attract investors. The government was able to stay true to its political statement. The cabinet settled the nationality recovery draft law and Lebanon’s electricity problems. It has also begun discussing a new electoral draft law and an administrative decentralization draft”, Sleiman said.

Sleiman stressed that Lebanon is clinging to all its oil drilling rights.  

The president noted that all practical measures were taken to secure UNIFIL troops, adding that the national defense strategy will be an opportunity to equip the LAF with tracking devices.

Sleiman reiterated Lebanon’s rejection of any plans to resettle Palestinian refugees, since they have the right to return to their land.

 “Lebanon is committed to all international resolutions, has lived up to its commitments towards the STL and recovered its position on the international scene”, Sleiman stressed.

The head of the diplomatic corps Papal Nuncio Gabriel Katchia said that, through its constitution and experience based on peaceful coexistence, Lebanon can be an example for all countries in the region.
