PM Salam says statements against Bahrain do not reflect Lebanon’s official stance

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Tammam Salam said he was adamant on “brotherly” ties between his country and Bahrain, noting that remarks against the Kingdom do not reflect the Lebanese government’s official stance.

“Lebanon’s political diversity, which generates multiple and contradictory stances regarding internal and external affairs, shall not be a pretext for harming the Lebanese interests or the country’s relation with any friendly state,” Salam said in a statement on Saturday.

“Lebanon’s official stance with regard to Arab and international issues is expressed by its government whose PM speaks on its behalf,” Salam added.

On January 9, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah alleged the presence of a “Zionist-like naturalization scheme” in Bahrain.

He also noted that top Bahraini dissident Sheikh Ali Salman, who was recently arrested by authorities, “has never called for toppling the regime and he did not incite to violence.”

“The authorities in Bahrain will realize that they are acting in a foolish way. They can jail most of the Bahraini people but that will only stop the protests on the streets and they will not be able to stop the protests in prisons,” added Nasrallah.

Following Nasrallah’s comments, Bahrain summoned Lebanon's charge d'affaires, urging a “clear condemnation” of his stances.
