Hassan: Lifting of subsidies will not affect medicines of chronic and incurable diseases
Caretaker Minister of Health Hamad Hassan discussed on Friday the plan to rationalize medicine during a meeting held with a delegation from the General Labor Confederation (GLC) headed by Bechara al-Asmar.

Hassan noted that his ministry is acting in its plan according to four main principles which are as follows:

1- Not to tamper with medicines of chronic and incurable diseases, regardless of their prices.

2- To encourage the national pharmaceutical industry and take the challenge of compensating the dollar that will be used for import with a dollar that will be collected from export.
3- To maintain the presence of International companies because their presence in the Lebanese market is necessary to maintain competitiveness which will automatically reflect on the quality and effectiveness of pharmaceutical industries.

4- Reducing subsidies will affect non-essential type of medicines which will give the citizens the option to choose between affordable medicines and others that are more expensive for those who want to buy them.

On another note, the caretaker minister announced that "Law No. 119 will be implemented before the end of the year and will affect 850 generic drugs, thus reducing the price by around thirty percent."

In turn, al-Asmar said that lifting the subsidies will need further discussions with civil and economic bodies and the General Labor Confederation, reiterating however rejection to such a move, especially in terms of medicines.

Al-Asmar voiced hopes that the lifting of subsidies would be postponed in order to give a chance for “an expanded dialogue that leads to the beginning of the required solutions, while maintaining a minimum level of political stability.”
