President Aoun to UNHCR chief: Lebanon urgently needs humanitarian assistance

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said Israeli attacks on Lebanon have triggered a major humanitarian crisis, with more than one million people displaced from targeted regions.

Speaking during a meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) chief Barham Salih, Aoun stressed that Lebanon urgently needs humanitarian assistance, warning that the consequences of mass displacement will persist even after any ceasefire.

Salih, for his part, said he had arrived in Lebanon to convey a message of solidarity with both the Lebanese people and the state during what he described as a difficult period.

He added that he had witnessed firsthand the scale of destruction in Beirut and the suffering of civilians, noting that the war has displaced more than one million people.

Following the meeting, Salih emphasized the international community's commitment to supporting Lebanon and working in partnership with the government to assist displaced populations. He called for increased global mobilization to meet growing humanitarian needs.

While stressing the importance of aid, Salih noted that the ultimate solution lies in ending the war and achieving a lasting peace, adding that efforts are ongoing to deliver assistance to displaced Lebanese in coordination with local authorities and international organizations.
