US State Department official: Talks seek to stabilize border and support Lebanese state control

A U.S. State Department official said that Israel and Lebanon have begun open, direct, high-level diplomatic talks for the first time since negotiations brokered in 1993, following escalating tensions driven by Hezbollah’s actions.

The official said the talks, mediated by the United States, aim to advance discussions on ensuring the long-term security of Israel’s northern border, while supporting the Lebanese government’s efforts to reassert full sovereignty over its territory and political life.

The official added that Israel’s war is with Hezbollah, not Lebanon, stressing that there is no reason the two neighboring countries should not engage in dialogue.
