REPORT: Calm restored in Tripoli, LAF deploy in the city

Calm was restored on Saturday in the northern city of Tripoli after the arrest of Youssef Diab and heavy clashes between Jabal Mohsen and Bab el-Tabbaneh.

This as, the Arab Democratic Party along with its supporters cut-off roads in Jabal Mohsen with burning tires to protest the actions undertaken by the Information Bureau against Diab and the way he was arrested.

The case of Diab was referred to the judiciary while the Arab Democratic Party urged the Lebanese state to deal with the case since “they will not rely on the Information Bureau’s investigations”.

This comes after the Lebanese Armed Forces conducted motorized patrols and Internal Security Forces carried out foot patrol between the 2 regions and in the Northern Lebanese city’s main streets.

Clashes erupted on Friday between Tripoli's Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tebbaneh on the Syria Street – al-Mallouleh axe, on the backdrop of the arrest of Youssef Diab from Jabal Mohsen.
In this regard, sources said that the security forces that were carrying out a raid operation to arrest Diab were subject to gunfire, forcing them to respond.

According to a military source, security forces opened fire at both sides of the conflict leading gunmen to throw hand grenades at the army’s tanks, stressing that no injuries among the military personnel were reported.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.
But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
